Astrocytes (black) are star-shaped support cells of the nervous system. Seen here is a mouse retina with astrocytes wrapping around blood vessels while interacting with neurons (orange) and their axons (green). It is believed astrocytes in the eye function as an extended blood-brain barrier and provide a healthy environment for neuron signaling.
