Injury within the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) cannot be repaired, as neurons that die due to damage fail to regenerate. In the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spine), however, neurons can be regenerated thanks to glial cells (stained orange here). Special types of glial cells regress to allow for nerves to regrow. Research in understanding these two processes may reveal therapies to repair permanently damaged brain tissue.
