Small plant-parasitic nematodes (high magnification view seen here) can cause devastating crop damage, resulting in approximately 5% of global crop loss each year. Of particular note are the root-knot nematodes, so named because they transform root cells into giant galls that impair a plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients from the soil.
